American Club Bucharest – Social Media and the Millennial Generation

“Social Media and the Millennial Generation” was the first workshop delivered by Bogdan Gavrila (CRSC Europe) at the American Corner Bucharest as part of the future American Club. We had a special guest, US Ambadssador Patricia Moller, and a great coversation with some outstanding future leaders.

The event was a great opportunity to explore the future of social media, digital diplomacy, MOOCs, Open Data and Open Government for young citizens.

Daniel Goleman in Bucharest: Ecological Intelligence and Leadership – What We Buy Can Change Everything

Daniel Goleman is an internationally known psychologist who lectures frequently to professional groups, business audiences, and on college campuses. As a science journalist Goleman reported on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times for many years. His 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times bestseller list for a year-and-a-half, with more than 5,000,000 copies in print worldwide in 40 languages, and has been a best seller in many countries. Apart from his books on emotional intelligence, Goleman has written books on  topics including self-deception, creativity, transparency, meditation, social and emotional learning, ecoliteracy and the ecological crisis.

The Harvard Business Review called emotional intelligence— which discounts IQ as the sole measure of one’s abilities — “a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea” and chose his article “What Makes a Leader” as one of ten “must-read” articles from its pages. Emotional Intelligence was named one of the 25 “Most Influential Business Management Books” by TIME Magazine. The Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and Accenture Insititute for Strategic Change have listed Goleman among the most influential business thinkers. C.P. Scott – School of Independent Journalism

We started C.P. Scott School of Independent Journalism for young people eager to learn to communicate effectively using new media. A new generation of journalists needs a new mindset and a new way of looking at stories.

History on the News

Why C.P. Scott!? Because we are a young team and we want to show everybody that we can comment freely without distorting reality. The motto “The facts are sacred, comments are free”.

Charles Prestwich Scott (26 October 1846 – 1 January 1932) was a British journalist, publisher and public figure. He was the editor of the Manchester Guardian (now the Guardian) from 1872 until 1929 and its owner from 1907 until his death.

In a famous 1921 essay marking the Manchester Guardian’s centenary (at which time he had served nearly fifty years as editor), Scott put down his opinions on the role of the newspaper. He argued that the “primary office” of a newspaper is accurate news reporting: in his words, “comment is free, but facts are sacred“. Even editorial comment has its responsibilities: “It is well to be frank; it is even better to be fair”. A newspaper should have a “soul of its own”, with staff motivated by a “common ideal”: although the business side of a newspaper must be competent, if it becomes dominant the paper will face “distressing consequences”.
